Gates Fly Shop is an extension of Gates Au Sable Lodge, a small, family owned-business on the banks of the Au Sable River near Grayling, Michigan. For over forty years we've featured hand-tied flies, excellent dining, a premier guide service and lodging within casting distance of the water. Purchased by the Gates family in the late 1970's, the business grew under Cal Gates Sr., his wife Mary, and their six children. One of these children, Calvin "Rusty" Gates Jr., took over the business in the wake of his father's untimely death, and, along with his wife Julie, built it into a nationally recognized destination.
Rusty Gates passed away in 2009. The 1994 Fly Rod and Reel Angler of the Year, Rusty was an icon in the North Woods, a staunch conservationist, a master fly-tyer, and a great lover of trout streams. He employed a legion of youngsters to work in the fly shop and to guide. In 2009, one of these youth (by then not so young), Josh Greenberg, began managing the business. Working with Rusty's wife Julie, they carried on the tradition until Julie sold the business to Josh in 2011.
Josh and his wife Katy now own and operate Gates Au Sable Lodge and Gates Fly Shop. Many of our customers have been coming here for forty years. Many others are new to the business. We are known for being a business of yesteryear, trusting in solid service, intimate river knowledge, and general friendliness to earn repeat business. The river out the front door is our classroom, our lifeblood, and our responsibility. The entire business relies on, and is dedicated, to its health.
